Q: What is the history of CJV?

A: Carolina Juniors Volleyball (CJV) is a division of Sports Connection in Charlotte, NC. CJV was started 20 years ago when the directors of the three local USAV-Travel Clubs joined the Sports Connection in an effort to create one unified volleyball club to allow the best talent to be able to play together.

CJV continues to be the Premier Volleyball Club in North and South Charlotte with over 2000 girls ages 3-18 and the most successful high school, middle school and collegiate coaches in the area. In addition to continuing to sponsor the most competitive teams in USAV competition from the area, CJV also has developed many other TEAM & TRAINING PROGRAMS to allow ALL levels of players to learn, practice and compete while striving to reach their full potential in the sport of volleyball.

Q: Arrival Information

A: Please refer to the email sent out to all tryout participants for arrival information. We are seperating each entrance by LAST NAME. Due to increased spectator numbers during tryouts and limited spectator space, we will have closed tryouts this season. If parents choose to come in with their child to help with check in, we ask they please leave after drop off.

Q: Team Bids - 15-18U Teams

A: Coaches will begin making calls to players the first day of tryouts, however, most calls will be made on the second day and well into the week. If a player is chosen for a team, at least 1/4 of the team payment is due within 48 hours of the athlete being placed on the team in your DAYSMART account and receiving the team confirmation email. Teams will be announced once they have been completed. While we wish we could provide a spot to every player that tries out, we will have a limited number of spots available. If a player is not chosen to be placed on a Travel Program team, you will receive an email once teams have been completed.

 Q: Team Bids - 11-14U Teams

A: Coaches will begin making calls to players the first day of tryouts, however, most calls will be made on the second day and well into the week. If a player is chosen for a team, at least 1/3 of the team payment is due within 48 hours of the athlete being placed on the team in your DAYSMART account and receiving the team confirmation email. Teams will be announced once they have been completed. While we wish we could provide a spot to every player that tries out, we will have a limited number of spots available. If a player is not chosen to be placed on a Travel Program team, you will receive an email once teams have been completed.

Q: Understanding The Process

A: We understand the tryout period can be a stressful time for both players and parents. While we hope all players give us a YES right away, we respect your prerogative to discuss your decision. In an effort to give all players a fair chance, we encourage players to respond to coaches within 24 hours of a bid offered to give us an answer, though it is not required.

Q: Primary vs Secondary Location

A: When registering your player for tryouts, parents can choose a primary location and a secondary location to indicate which location they are most interested in practicing at. Parents have the option to choose a primary location only, and not include a secondary location. This indication helps our coaches make decisions when offering a player. For example, if two Semi National teams are interested in a player, they will refer to your location preference to decide which team will offer your player. If a National team and a Semi National team are interested in your player, your player will receive the National offer. Players will receive the highest offer if there are multiple coaches interested.

Q: Team Confirmation Emails

A: In order to participate during tryouts, you simply need to pay the CJV tryout fee. You do not need to purchase any USAV or AAU memberships. If you make a team, you will receive a team confirmation email with specific payment due dates and instructions. Your first payment will be due 48 hours after you receive your team confirmation email. 2022-2023 Team Parent meetings will be October 16 at our Granite St location from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. Details will be provided in your team confirmation email.

Q: Player Fees & Tournament Schedules

A: Please access our Player Fees and Tournament Schedules document to view the tentative tournament schedules and player fees for your age group. Since many of the tournaments we normally attend have not finalized their dates yet, and since teams and coaches will we have more time during the pre-season this year to make adjustments, there may be minor changes to the posted tournament schedule.

Travel Program Information

Q: Am I guaranteed equal playing time at every tournament, practice, and league game?

A: The focus of the CJV program is individual and team improvement through practice and training. Each player will receive equal training in practices, but playing time at tournaments may not be equal. The coach for each team will determine playing time based on ability, attitude, attendance, effort and many other factors. CJV policy is that playing time on Travel Teams will be totally at the coach’s discretion. Playing time on the younger and more developmental teams will be equal. Playing time on the more competitive teams may not be equal in all league games.

Q: When will I find out what times my daughters' team practices?

A: Practice times and days will vary based on what team you are playing with. Most practices will be sometime from 4-10 PM on Mondays through Thursdays, Fridays 4-8 PM or Sundays 1-9 PM. Practice schedules will be finalized in November at the latest.

Q: Is a deposit required for the Team Programs?

A: Each year we have players who decide they do not want to play after we post the teams. This is unfortunate, because other players have been cut from those rosters and are understandably upset. Travel Level Teams are required to pay a $35 Tryout Fee and then will have 48 hours to pay a portion of your team fee and after teams are posted or we will remove you from the team. To withdraw from being selected for a Team submit your request IN WRITING prior to the end of the second tryout. The exact fee schedule will be sent via email a few days before tryouts.

Q: Can I play up in a higher age group?

A: Players are asked to tryout/play for their appropriate age/grade group. Coaches may then consider moving a player to an older age group based on positional needs of the team. Players are only moved if it is in the best interest of the player, team and club. It is rare that a player is allowed to play outside of her age group.

Q: Can I get a refund if I am injured?

A: The CJV club hopes everyone has an enjoyable and injury free season. In the event a player is injured and is unable to continue the season, every effort will be made to find a replacement player. The injured player may be given a partial refund only if a new player is added to the team roster. (Not if a player is moved from another team.) Players quitting (for any reason) are responsible for their remaining balances.

Q: Can I get a refund if the season, or my team, is cancelled or unable to complete the season?

A: In the 25+ years of the CJV Club, we have never had a season get cancelled...but of course we have never had a pandemic like COVID-19 happen before. We will continue to make every attempt to refund all players as much of their player fee as possible if the season is shortened or cancelled. Some expenses from tournaments, travel fees and other expenses may not be refundable if they are not returned to the CJV Club. All accounting, refunds or credits will be processed at the end of the CJV Club season, which is the end of July.

Q: What are the other expenses not covered in the Program Fee?

A: The Travel Team fees are determined by how many and which tournaments your coach chooses for the team to attend. Team Fees range from $595-$4295 . Depending on the age and level of the team, either 1/3 or 1/4 of the team fee is due within 48 hours of when offers are accepeted. More details and cost estimates will be available at tryouts and on the CJV website. Fee Includes: Tryouts, Practices, Clinics, Uniforms, Coaches Salaries and Expenses for Practices and All Tournaments, Equipment (Volleyballs, Courts, Nets, Practice Equipment, etc.), Overhead (Administration, Websites, Insurance, Credit Cards, Accounting, Staff), etc. Additional Costs Include: USAV / AAU Membership ($45-60/player), Individual Player's Travel Expenses, Possible Extra Tournaments and Other Optional Team Expenses. Some teams may choose to do fundraisers during the season.

Q: If I do not make a higher level team, will I be placed on a team at the next level?

A: Coaches will place you on the best team based on your volleyball abilities and the programs you register for. There is a possibility your player may not receive an offer from CJV. Players who are trying out for a Travel team will NOT be placed on a Gold team if they do not receive an offer. Players must tryout for Gold in addition to Travel.

Q: What are my parents responsibilities in CJV and at tournaments?

A: CJV encourages all parents to be active, positive members of the team. Each Travel Team should have a couple of "Team Parents" to help with phone calls, organization, car pools, chaperoning, fundraisers, etc.Parents role for teams tournaments include transportation, food, drinks, cheering and moral support. Parents should never heckle players, referees, coaches or show poor sportsmanship in any form. For our Gold/Silver/Bronze programs, we ask that parents direct ALL questions and concerns to the CJV directiors by email at Office@CarolinaJuniors.com.

Q: Why does CJV hold closed tryouts?

A: Carolina Juniors understands that tryouts can be a stressful time for athletes. To encourage each player to do their best, we hold closed tryouts. This means that tryouts are closed to all spectators until the time of pick up. We feel by taking away the added stress of being watched by spectators, participants tend to perform better and have more fun on the court.

Q: Why Summer Tryouts?

A: Historically tryouts for our CJV Travel Teams have been in the Fall AFTER most middle school and high schools have finished their volleyball seasons. For the 2020 / 2021 season, we have decided to have our Travel Team Tryouts the end of August, BEFORE most schools begin their volleyball seasons. Below are some of the reasons and benefits of having tryouts earlier. Visit one of our Travel Team Program pages and click on Why Summer Tryouts for more details.
