Open Play

Open Play is available on most days of the week and some weeknights and weekends at various times. To view the actual dates, times, and availability and to register for Open Play, please visit Sign-Up Genius

Pre-registration for all Open Play is strongly recommended. Players pre-registering will have priority over walk-in players. There will be a maximum number of players allowed per each Open Play session to allow all players to maximize their playing time. Open Play sessions are scheduled for 2 to 4 hour blocks of time. No payment is required to pre-register and players can arrive at anytime during their session time, but should clear the courts at the session end time. Players pre-registering and not showing up, or cancelling at least 2 hours in advance, will be charged the normal open play fee. This applies to Basic and Deluxe members. Open Play is $5 for BASIC Members, $8 for GUESTS and Free for DELUXE Members. Cash or PicklePasses can be used for Open Play. No credit cards please.

(NOTE: Due to the high number of last minute cancellations, the open play sign up roster will be locked 24 hours before. Any player needing to remove themselves once the roster is locked, will need to email Office@PickleballCharlotte.com to have their name removed. Players with excessive cancellations may be asked to prepay or may have their membership status changed.)

Pickleball Charlotte accepts Cash, Checks and Credit Cards (for purchases over $6) at the front counter when you check in. Open Play is FREE for DELUXE Members, but pre-registration is still suggested to guarantee you a spot in your preferred Open Play sessions. We encourage BASIC Members to use a PICKLE-PASS to pre-purchase a book of Open Play Sessions instead of having to pay at the front counter each visit. (A PICKLE-PASS is a re-loadable electronic "virtual card" that allows BASIC members to buy a book of 10 sessions for $50 and then use the PICKLE-PASS each time to "pay" for Open Play.) PICKLE-PASSES are valid for one year after purchase.

All players must follow the normal Pickleball Charlotte Open Play rules and are not allowed to play with the same players all night and "take over" a court. Players wanting to play with their own group on their own court should consider renting a court or two.

Please sign up for ONLY ONE SESSION PER DAY PER PERSON in advance to allow space for other players to register for open sessions. Customers can register for more additional sessions on the same day if less than 48 hours in advance. This applies to Open Play and Rentals.

PLAYER CARD - All Pickleball players will be issued a free Player Card on their first visit to Pickleball Charlotte. This Player Card should be scanned at the front counter each time you enter the Pickleball Charlotte facility.

"Why bother?  Others can do it; I don't need to learn how to Ref."  True, but the sport of pickleball needs Refs especially in the NC/SC area. In general, the east coast is about 15 years behind the west coast in quality of tournaments which is a key factor to growing the sport. Referees make all the difference. And you can be a part of making a difference.

Pickleball 411

Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. It is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It can be played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. Pickleball is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The format of play can be singles or doubles, with doubles being the most popular. The governing body for Pickleball is the USA Pickleball Association. Visit their website USAPA.org for complete Rules, History and Other Information.

Courts & Equipment

The pickleball court is the same size as a doubles badminton court and measures 20 X 44 feet. In pickleball, the same court is used for both singles and doubles play. The net height is 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches in the middle. The court is striped similar to a tennis court with right and left service courts and a 7-foot non-volley zone in front of the net (referred to as the "kitchen").

When playing pickleball, each player will need a pickleball paddle, which is smaller than a tennis racquet but larger than a ping-pong paddle. Originally, paddles were made only from wood, however today's paddles have evolved dramatically and are primarily made of lightweight composite materials, including aluminum and graphite. Players will also need a net and a pickleball. The ball itself is unique, with holes through it like a wiffleball and there are different ball models intended for indoor and outdoor play. The ball travels at 1/3 the speed of a tennis ball and is usually white or yellow in color. New bright color balls are also gaining in popularity.

Pickleball Charlotte has a number of pickleball paddles and other equipment and supplies available at our South Charlotte location for you to try out and purchase. Paddles are also available for rent and custom orders can be handled for all the top brands of paddles.
